Curt Schroder (R-Chester County), Republican chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee, filed a “friend of the court” brief in Commonwealth Court in support of state Treasurer Rob McCord, who is suing the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) for limiting his access and role as an ex officio member of the PGCB.

As the governor and legislative leaders continue discussions about budget cuts necessitated by the reduction in expected federal Medicaid assistance (FMAP) funding, Rep. Curt Schroder (R-East Brandywine) and 26 fellow Republican lawmakers said that discretionary grant funding known as WAMs should be the first thing to go.

Rep. Matt Baker (R-Bradford/Tioga), Republican chairman of the House Health and Human Services Committee, and Rep. Curt Schroder (R-Chester) today renewed their call for passage of the Health Care Freedom Act in Pennsylvania, which would ban governments from forcing people to have health insurance or face fines and penalties. A similar measure passed by an overwhelming 71 percent of voters in Missouri yesterday.

Pennsylvania is no stranger to public corruption. Whether for personal or political gain, the Commonwealth’s history of public corruption dates back to the 1800s. In the past four decades alone, there have been numerous scandals involving ghost employees, job selling, sexual offenses, cover-ups and kickbacks for lucrative state contracts – otherwise known as “pay-to-play.” Bonusgate, the Luzerne County “Kids for Cash” scandal, and the licensing of casino owners with criminal backgrounds provide the latest examples of government bodies that have allegedly demonstrated an inability or unwillingness to appropriately police themselves.

It was satisfying to learn that the statewide grand jury assembled two years ago to investigate the Capitol corruption scandal known as Bonusgate had decided to issue a report on its findings.   Contrary to reports, not everyone in the General Assembly has scoffed at or derided the recommendations.  It was even more satisfying to learn that many of the grand jury’s recommendations for reforming the Legislature and curbing public corruption are already contained in bills I have introduced.
